Finally. After years of good intentions we planted a garden. Landon gets most of the credit for building the fence and getting it ready to plant. Though a little unlevel (ok maybe a lot) I love it because of all the hard work the kids put into it. After buying seeds, pretty shovels, knee pads that we didn't use and 9 pairs of multi-colored garden gloves it may not be the most economical way to eat a salad but definitely the most fulfilling.

Mystic Mountain Forge has been burning non-stop as my dad and brother Chad bend & pound out cabinet hardware for Windy Ridge. My dad let the kids borrow his idle antique forge and they have been blacksmithing dawn to dusk. The lovely smell of coal intertwined with the summer breeze floats in the open windows. The sound of metal hitting metal and furious hand-cranking resonates throughout the ranch. Children with only the whites of their eyes showing are on a mission to turn every piece of scrap metal into shovels, knives and keys.

Susie the parakeet passed away this morning. Her little yellow life cut short when she made the fateful decision to fly out the window and go for a joyride in the eagle ridden sky. She had just perfected the squeaking sound my flip flops make, which was a constant reminder that I need to pick up my feet when I walk. We recently found out during mating season that Susie is actually a boy and Archie is a girl but I couldn't switch their names, just didn't seem right. Levi found her about 1/4 mile away on the road. We will miss you little Susie. Until we buy another yellow bird to take your place.

Let me tell you a wee bit about my Dad. The oldest of 12 children he is merely 21 years older than me. Though we didn't have much money when we were growing up, I never felt poor. He is a dreamer that pursues his dreams with passion, this made life an adventure for us. When he planted his garden he researched until he was and expert on everything he planted. When he decided he wanted to learn to speak another language he walked around for weeks with headphones attached to his ears and to our delight jabbered at us in sing-song Chinese. When he decided he wanted to make a violin he did. When he said he was going to make our trailer home look like a coke bottle...it never happened. I am still a little disappointed about that. He brought us camping all over the Northwest (to some places my mom wasn't too fond of hiking in to,but we loved it!). We even took up ranching for awhile, remember that brothers? He is a master woodworker & storyteller. This also makes him a great Grandpa, the Grandkids get handmade rocking horses, rubber band guns & stories they will remember for a lifetime. He can play the violin, guitar & piano. Despite losing a kidney when he was a young boy and 5 bypass heart surgery, more recently, he is still going strong. I am blessed.
